Boats at the Old Town Alexandria Waterfront

This one is from my archives. This photo was taken back in 2009 in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia. Located on the west bank of the Potomac River the historic City of Alexandria is approximately six miles (9.6 kilometers) south of downtown Washington, D.C. Dating back 1749, Alexandria’s riverfront was an important colonial port during the colonial, revolutionary and Civil War periods. Ok, enough of the history. The photo was created using three bracketed shots. I used the Canon Rebel's auto bracketing feature. Unfortunately I did not have a tripod at that time, but if I did, I would have not use the camera's auto bracketing feature and I could have done this manually. I'm happy with the result. I wanted a realistic feel and take advantage of the natural colors that is already in the scene most especially the color of the sun that afternoon.

To process this HDR Photo, I used a combination of softwares, Photomatix pro 4, Photoshop CS5 and Topaz Detail Plugin.

First I merge the bracketed shots in Photomatix, I played around the sliders a bit  until I came up with the look I wanted. I then opened the finish hdr using Photoshop CS5 and used Topaz Adjust to add some detail to the foreground subjects which in this case the boat Admiral Tilp and the boat behind it.

  • Photomatix Pro – I used this in creating this High Dynamic Range Photograph by merging the three exposures I shot.
  • Topaz Adjust – This from Topaz Labs. I used this to enhanced the details on my photographs.
