Another great accessory to have when shooting macro is the extension tube, like the one I use, the  Pro Optic Budget Auto Extension .  I use an extension tube primarily to cut the minimum focusing distance of my lens, this way, I can get much closer to the subject. The advantage of an extension tube is that, I can use it on most of my existing lenses and I can get closer to the subject and get some pretty decent macro shot without investing on a macro lens. The disadvantage of an extension tube is it’s harder to use, it requires a lot of patience and more effort on part of the photographer, you loose autofocus and you camera may or may not  register and/or represent the correct f-stop.  I did a short review of the Pro Optic Budget Auto Extension a while back, you can read it here.
