Canon EOS 6D Sample Photos
November 5, 2014
I wanted to see how well the canon EOS 6d perform when used in sports photography so I brought it with me to shoot a high school girls soccer game and a girls basketball game last night.
When shooting field sports like foootball, soccer and baseball, I always set my camera to shutter priority sometimes in manual, wide open at F/2.8 and in auto ISO, I don’t worry too much about my aperture and my ISO, I let the camera take care of that for me. I’m only concern about my shutter speed, in most cases, the fields are always dark, I mostly shoot at 1/640 and never go below 1/320, in good light, I shoot at 1/1600 or faster if light permits.
The Canon 6d’s ISO capability is one of the strength of this camera. At high ISO’s the images are cleaner compare to my 7D. This is using the same lenses like the Tokina 16-28mm F/2.8, Canon EF 70-200mm F/2.8 and Canon EF 400mm F/5.6L.
The photo above was shot at ISO 5000, but the noise levels are lower compare to my Canon EOS 7d. This part of the field is dark and I have to really boost my ISO even at f/2.8 I still have to lower my shutter speed when point on this side of the field when shooting with the 7D, but with the 6d I was able to shoot at 1/500 to get clear sharp picture and stop the action.
With the Canon EOS 6d, I was able to shoot with my Canon EF 400mm F/5.6L in high shutter speeds (1/400). When using this on my 7D under stadium lights (which is awfully dark most of the time), I can only shoot at 1/250-1/320 at 12,800 ISO, which is really noisy. The image at 12800 iso on the 6d is way cleaner than my 7D.
For me the Canon EOS 6D is a great all around full frame camera. It can be used for photographing events, sports landscape, you name it. For sports photography, the only downside I see is the lower frame rate, but still useable.
Here some of the Photos I shot from last nights game using the Canon EOS 6D
