Samyang 35mm 1:1.4 AS UMC
Samyang 35mm 1:1.4 AS UMC is an optically sophisticated bright (f/1.4) wide-angle lens with focal length of 35 mm. It was designed to work especially with full-frame sensor cameras, nevertheless it may be also used with cameras featuring APS-C/DX and Four-thirds sensors. The device’s optical construction comes with two lenses with high refractive index (HR) limiting its weight and dimensions. One aspherical lens (AS) protecting against chromatic aberration was also used. High-quality multi-layer and anti-reflexive coatings (UMC) increase the contrast and allow to generate more natural colours. Samyang 35mm 1:1.4 AS UMC lens takes advantage of the so called “gliding lenses” allowing to maintain high image quality with minimum focusing distance. AE model, intended for Nikon DSLR cameras feature a microprocessor unit allowing to have full control over the exposure parameters and freely use i-TTL flash control technology. Data on focal length and available apertures is recorded in EXIF format.

36-months guarantee is provided for Samyang 35mm 1:1.4 AS UMC.

Summary
Pros:
- very good, momentarily even splendid image quality in the frame centre,
- good image quality on the edge, even on full frame,
- low lateral chromatic aberration,
- moderate distortion,
- splendidly corrected astigmatism,
- the smallest vignetting in the 1.4/35 class lenses,
- decent work against bright light,
- very good price/quality ratio.
Cons:
- visible longitudinal chromatic aberration,
- noticeable coma.
In this summary you can write just one thing: aces of the photographical market, it’s high time you got down to work seriously! If Samyang is able to launch a 540$ lens which, when it comes to the image quality, is only slightly worse than the Canon 35L, which can compete on equal terms with the Nikkor 1.4/35G and leaves far behind the Sony 1.4/35G; if such a lens is able to correct the lateral chromatic aberration, coma and vignetting the best of all instruments in this group and it is not worse when it comes to the distortion and astigmatism correction, what else could be said here?
It is known – the reputable companies will try to tempt us with an ultrasonic autofocus, weather-resistance or a barrel made of magnesium alloys. These features are important and worth being taken into consideration for sure. You should remember, though, that we pay a lot for them because Canon and Nikon lenses can be even four times more expensive than the Samyang, tested here.

Looks like up to now, there’s still no date to the release of the much awaited Samyang 35mm F/1.4 AS UMC. Originally scheduled for release last February of 2011, but was delayed due to last minute changes on the design. The Final Version of the Samyang 35mm F/1.4mm now has a new metallic red ring, and a focusing scale has been added.
Official Announcement:
Delta company, the sole distributor of Samyang products for Europe proudly presents the final version of the long-waited for Samyang 35mm 1:1.4 AS UMC. Our new lens comes with utterly new design, with its distinguishing mark: a metallic red ring.
A new concept version of Samyang 35mm 1:1.4 AS UMC was officially introduced during Photokina 2010 fairs held in Cologne. Since then, we have carried out intensive works to improve optical qualities of theproduct and devise its unique and exceptional design. The conducted works have allowed us to bring you the final version of the lens. Due to your recommendations we decided to add the focusing scale and diminish the overall dimension of the product. Samyang 35mm 1:1.4 AS UMC is an optically sophisticated 35mm f/1.4 wide-angle lens, which was designed for full-frame reflex camera. Nevertheless, it may be also used with APS-C/DX and Four Thirds cameras. The lens’s optical construction was based on two lenses made of the quality glass with high refraction factor, which made it possible to minimize its weight and dimensions. Moreover, we used an aspherical lens was to prevent the horizontal chromatic aberration. Owing to the high-quality, dense anti-reflexive layers, the lens produces stunningly high contrasts and perfectly reflects the natural colors. Samyang 35mm 1:1.4 AS UMC also takes advantage of the so called gliding lenses allowing to minimize the focusing distance.
The lens will be available for sale with the following mounts: Canon, Four Thirds, Nikon, Pentax, Samsung NX and Sony Alfa.
The recommended retail price for the non-CPU version was established at EUR 379 gross.

Manufacturer’s Description:
Sophisticated optics of Samyang 35 mm F1.4 UMC has been constructed upon twelve elements arranged in ten groups. The lens comes with two lenses made of the glass with high refraction factor, which reduces its weight and dimensions. Moreover, one aspherical lens minimizes the risk of chromatic aberration. Owing to the high-quality multi-layer coatings, our lens provides high contrast and faithful color imaging. Samyang 35 mm f/1.4 AS UMC uses the system of the so called “floating” lenses allowing to preserve high image quality with minimum focusing distance.
Samyang 35 mm F1.4 AS UMC was constructed to fit most popular reflexive cameras with small sensors. 35mm focal length has universal applications. When attached to the small sensor camera, the lens will act as bright, wide-angle lens perfect for landscape and reporting shooting. The same lens mounted on the camera with APS-C sensor, will become a popular, multitask 50mm lens. In case of cameras with 3:4 system, Samyang 35 mm F1.4 AS UMC will turn into a short, bright portrait lens with 70mm focal length equivalent.
Samyang 35 mm F1.4 AS UMC has been designed with great care for the smallest details and perfect style. This applies both to optics and workmanship, which place the lens among the best photographic products worldwide.

Samyang is also the manufacturer of the Rokinon/Vivitar 85mm f/1.4 which I also planed to buy, except that I already have a EF 85mm F/1.8.

I’ve noticed that a lot of people especially beginners and amateurs like me are confuse about prime lenses. Often they refer to zoom lenses with fix aperture as prime lenses, and some refer to Canon L lenses as prime lenses, so I decided to do a little research myself.
Prime lens is a lens that have fixed focal length or one focal length, a great example of a prime lens in the Canon Lens lineup is the famous and cheap Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II or The Nifty 50
.
Here are some characteristics of a prime lens:
