Duck your head!!!

Sunday Feb. 06, 2011. It’s a great day for street photography, Sunny, not too cold and best of all it’s crowded. Lots and lots of photo opportunities. This is why I love using a wide angle lens for street photography, at 17mm in my tamron 17-50mm, I can get really close into the action. In the photo above the person on the left was trying to get out of my way.  I did a horse stance so I can go lower and take the shot from below.

Infrared Urban Landscape Photo of Alexandria King St. Metro Station.

This is part of the Infrared Photo Collection I’m working on. This was taken yesterday when I got off the Alexandria King St. Metro Station. As I was walking along King St. just passing by the metro railway above, I look up and saw a the traffic lights, the train that just stopped and this magnificent blue sky. Hmm, what if I the sky is black, this should be interesting I said to myself, so I grab my IR camera(Sony DSC-V3), and took some shots. This one is my favorite. So I decided to post it as the Photo of the Day for Day 9(Sunday, January, 09, 2011).

Taking Photo a Stranger

“How To Take a Photograph of a Complete Stranger?” Yeah, how do I do this? This is a common question every photographer asks, especially those starting or those into street photography, and like what i’ve mentioned in my previous post on Taking Street Portraits of Randon People the problem is, it’s awkward and uncommon to others.

So should we asks for permission when taking a photograph of a complete stranger we see in the streets? For me, it depends on what type of photograph you want, if you want to stage the shot and you need someone to pose for you, then, it’s just right to ask for permission, but if you want to photograph a moment, that you see while you’re in the streets, then I would say no, you are loosing spontaneity and that precious moment that you wanted to freeze is gone.

If you are worried about legal rights, there is no legal right to privacy when you are in public space / domain, and we don’t have legal obligation to ask for permission as long as we don’t use the photograph in any commercial purposes.

How do I do it? In a busy, crowded environment, like an event or a busy city street, most of the time, I just smile, raised my camera, to signal that I want to take his/her photograph, if they smile and didn’t turn their back on you, then it means, they agree. I think it’s really a matter of how you present yourself in public.

The photo above was taken in Georgetown in DC during the Georgetown Merriment.

Shame
Shame” By Ness Flores

Taken today outside the Washington DC convention center. A great subject for today’s photo of the day. I really love walking around the streets of DC, lots of photographic opportunities and luckily you’ll often find scenes like these in the Streets Of DC. If I only have the time to go out in the streets everyday nothing could get out of the way of my lens.

For street photography I use the following gear:

streets-5716

Camera : Canon Rebel XS 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens (Black)
Lens : Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Standard Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras

Book Recommendation:
Here is a great book by David duChemin. I just got mine a few days ago and after reading just the first few pages I can tell that this book can really change my vision on how I approach my photography. It’s not a book that discusses technical aspect of photography, this one focusses on inspiration, it digs deep into your inner soul so you can have a better vision. Well, that’s just me. if you are looking for a book that will teach you the basics of photography like aperture or shutter speeds, this is not the book for you.
