The answer is yes and no. You can take macro or closeup photos of most subjects using a non slr point and shoot camera that have built-in macro features. Most point and shoot even the small one’s like the Canon PowerShot SD1200IS 10 MP Digital Camera which I think is the cheapest in the canon point and shoot lineup has a built-in macro feature. The photo above was taken using a Sony Cybershot DSC-T70 8.1MP Digital Camera
and the photo below was taken using my old 5MP Sony DSC-V1 point and shoot camera.

Now if you want to take your macro photography to the next level then you will need a Digital SLR. Digital SLR gives you the ability to change lenses which will allow you to choose from a wide variety of macro specialty lenses that can increase magnification to 1:1 ratio or more. DSLR will allow you to take really close shots of almost everything you can imagine, you can even take portrait shots of insects and other tiny living things, you just have to get down on your knees to get into their world.
This photo of the Dandelion(Parachute Ball) below was taken using a Canon Rebel XS 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera with a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens for Canon SLR Cameras
